Haryana Civil Service (Judicial Branch) Examination

Basic eligibility paths

• ✓Under Rule 2, Part A of the Punjab Civil Service (Judicial Branch) Rules as applicable to Haryana, a candidate must be 21 to 40 years old on the last date for the application form; the ceiling is 45 years for Scheduled Caste, Scheduled Tribe and Backward Class candidates, and an ex-serviceman may deduct up to five years.
• ✓Rule 3 requires an LLB from a University established by law and approved or recognised by the Bar Council of India, plus knowledge of basic computer application for usage purposes.
• ✓Rule 4 requires satisfactory evidence of good moral character and conduct and of medical fitness; Rule 5 disqualifies a person with more than one wife living.
• ✓These are the standing service rules. Confirm the cut-off date, reservation and category rules in the official current-cycle notice.

• SC/ST, OBC-NCL, PwBD and ex-servicemen relaxations follow the applicable notification.

Selection stages

1. 1Preliminary examination — Part C, Rule 1 of the rules; not more than ten times the advertised posts are shortlisted for the mains
2. 2Main written examination of five papers — Part C, Rule 7
3. 3Viva-voce — a candidate needs at least 33 per cent in each written paper and 50 per cent in the aggregate of the written papers (45 per cent for SC, ST and Backward Class candidates), and the viva list is capped at three times the vacancies
4. 4Final merit requires 50 per cent (45 per cent for SC, ST and Backward Class candidates) in the aggregate of the mains and viva-voce

Syllabus snapshot

• Paper-I Civil Law-I — Code of Civil Procedure, Punjab Courts Act, Indian Contract Act, Indian Partnership Act, Sale of Goods Act, Specific Relief Act and Indian Evidence Act (200 marks, per Part C, Rule 7 of the rules).
• Paper-II Civil Law-II — Hindu Law, Mohammadan Law and Customary Law, Law of Registration and Limitation (200 marks).
• Paper-III Criminal Law — Indian Penal Code, Code of Criminal Procedure and Indian Evidence Act (200 marks).
• Paper-IV English — essay, précis, words and phrases, comprehension and corrections (200 marks).
• Paper-V Language — Hindi in Devanagari script at Board of School Education, Haryana matriculation standard (100 marks).
• Paper-VI Viva-voce — conducted in English on matters of general interest (200 marks).
• Each written paper is of three hours and only bare copies of legislative enactments are supplied; use the official current-cycle syllabus when it is published.
