Basic eligibility paths

• ✓Under Rule 18 of the Orissa Superior Judicial Service and Orissa Judicial Service Rules, 2007 a candidate must be a law graduate of a recognised University and aged between 23 and 35 years on 1 August of the year for which the vacancy is determined.
• ✓The same rule requires fluency in Oriya and a pass in an Oriya language examination equivalent to Middle English School standard, good character, and sound health free from organic defect.
• ✓Rule 15 places direct recruitment to the Civil Judge (Junior Division) cadre with the Odisha Public Service Commission through a competitive examination held under the rules and the Appendix D syllabus.

Syllabus snapshot

• Preliminary written examination (Appendix D, Part I) — one objective paper of 100 marks with 100 one-mark multiple-choice questions in one and a half hours, with 25 per cent negative marking, covering the Constitution of India, CPC, CrPC, Evidence Act, IPC, Limitation Act, Transfer of Property Act, Contract Act, law of succession, Specific Relief Act and the Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Act, 2005.
• Main examination compulsory Paper-1 General English (150 marks) — translation and retranslation, a short essay, précis writing and a comprehension passage.
• Main examination compulsory Paper-2 Procedural Laws (150 marks) — Code of Criminal Procedure 1973, Code of Civil Procedure 1908 and Indian Evidence Act 1872.
• Three optional papers of 150 marks each chosen from Law of Crime and Torts, Personal Law, Law of Property, Law of Contract, and Jurisprudence and the Constitution of India.
• Interview of 100 marks, ordinarily within the mains syllabus but also covering broad national and international issues.
• The standard of the papers is that of the LLB course; use the official current-cycle syllabus when it is published.
