Under the standing UGC-NET scheme published by NTA, a master's degree or equivalent with at least 55% marks (50% for OBC-NCL/SC/ST/PwD/third gender) qualifies a candidate to appear; a four-year/eight-semester bachelor's degree with at least 75% marks qualifies only for JRF and PhD admission. The December 2026 bulletin will restate these rules and their cut-off date.
Age
Under the standing UGC-NET scheme the JRF age limit is not more than 30 years as on the first day of the month in which the examination concludes, with up to 5 years' relaxation for OBC-NCL/SC/ST/PwD/third-gender and women candidates; there is no upper age limit for Assistant Professor eligibility or PhD admission. The December 2026 cut-off date is not published yet.

Application fee
Rs. 1,150 General, Rs. 600 Gen-EWS and OBC-NCL and Rs. 325 SC/ST/PwD and third gender in the previously published bulletin (UGC-NET June 2025); the December 2026 fee is not published yet.

Who can apply?

A readable first check—not a legal eligibility decision.

Basic eligibility paths

  • Master's degree or equivalent with at least 55% marks (50% for OBC-NCL/SC/ST/PwD/third gender), or a four-year bachelor's degree with at least 75% marks, under the standing UGC-NET eligibility chapter published by NTA.
  • Final-year and result-awaited candidates may apply provisionally under the standing scheme and must complete the qualifying degree within the prescribed period after the result.
  • Confirm the December 2026 subject list, cut-off date and documentary rules only from the cycle-specific Information Bulletin when NTA publishes it.

Relaxations & certificates

  • SC/ST, OBC-NCL, PwBD and ex-servicemen relaxations follow the applicable notification.
  • Always check the certificate format and cut-off date in the official notice.
If your degree title, age, domicile or category certificate is unusual, mark yourself “check required” and read the official wording.

Syllabus snapshot

  • Paper I — 50 questions / 100 marks on teaching and research aptitude; Paper II — 100 questions / 200 marks on the chosen subject; 180 minutes in total with two marks per question and no negative marking, under the standing UGC-NET examination scheme.
