Basic eligibility paths

• ✓Recruitment is to Lower Division Assistant / Lower Division Clerk and similar posts under the rule-making power of the Government of West Bengal (detailed advertisement 13/2023).
• ✓Reservation benefits are available only to SC, ST and OBC (non-creamy layer) candidates of West Bengal, to EWS candidates of West Bengal, to Persons with Benchmark Disabilities with 40% or more disability, to ex-servicemen and to meritorious sportspersons in the listed sports.
• ✓The upper age limit is relaxed by 5 years for SC and ST and by 3 years for OBC (non-creamy layer) candidates of West Bengal, and up to 45 years for Persons with Benchmark Disabilities; ex-servicemen with at least six months' continuous service deduct that service from their age with a further margin of three years.
• ✓Category-wise qualifying marks in the aggregate of Part-I and Part-II are 40% for UR, EWS and meritorious sportspersons, 38% for OBC (A and B), 35% for SC and 30% for ST, PwBD and ex-servicemen.

• SC/ST, OBC-NCL, PwBD and ex-servicemen relaxations follow the applicable notification.

Selection stages

1. 1Part-I — objective type, 100 marks in 100 one-mark multiple-choice questions on English (30), General Studies (40) and Arithmetic (30), in 1 hour 30 minutes, with negative marking of 0.25 mark per wrong answer
2. 2Part-II — conventional written, Group-A English and Group-B Bengali/Hindi/Urdu/Nepali/Santali carrying 50 marks each, in 1 hour
3. 3Elementary knowledge of computer operation and typing ability on computer, judged only after a candidate qualifies in Part-I and Part-II

Syllabus snapshot

• Part-I English covers fundamentals of the language — vocabulary, grammar, sentence structure, synonyms, antonyms and correct usage.
• Part-I General Studies covers matters of everyday observation including everyday science, current events and problems with special reference to India, and elementary Indian History and Indian Geography.
• Part-I Arithmetic covers divisibility, fractions, decimals, recurring decimals, simplification, HCF, LCM, partnership, average, ratio and proportion, percentage, simple interest, profit and loss, time and distance, and area of rectangles and squares.
• Part-II Group-A and Group-B require drafting a report from supplied points, condensing a prose passage and translation between English and the chosen language; the standard of the examination is that of the Madhyamik Examination of the West Bengal Board of Secondary Education.
